John J. Sullivan is a 1973 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and a 1976 graduate of the Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington, IN. During law school John J. Sullivan interned for the Chief Judge of the Southern District of Indiana, William Steckler.

For 9 years, John J. Sullivan was associated with the law firm of White & Raub in Indianapolis, IN. White & Raub is a defense-oriented firm. There John Sullivan gained trial experience in major gas explosaion cases and train accidents.

John J. Sullivan is politically active. In the early 70s, he worked for Congressman Michael Harrington (D-MA). In 1983, John J. Sullivan was the Democratic nominee for Mayor of Indianapolis. He has been a delegate to the National Democratic Convention. He has been State Chairman of the Dick Gephardt for President Committee (1988) and Bob Kerrey for President Committee (1992). John J. Sullivan has served on numerous committees for the Indiana Democratic Party.

Although John J. Sullivan is active in the Democratic Party, he represents clients regardless of their political affiliation. John J. Sullivan is respected by both major political parties. In most cases, he is seen as a facilitator. In 1985, John J. Sullivan was appointed by the Republican Mayor of Indianapolis to serve on the Marion County Convention Center and Recreational Facilities Commission. That 3-member commission oversaw the expansion of the RCA Dome, the convention center and the United Air Line Maintenance Facilty. Also, in 1988, John J. Sullivan was Chairman of the Indiana Recount Commission.

In 1996, John J. Sullivan was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by then Indiana Governor, Evan Bayh.
